The Secret History of the Pink Carnation – Lauren Willig

A wonderful romp through early Regency era England and France. I adored these books, and have them in my re-read pile Willig is a trained historian, and has endnotes where she explains the actual history of the event, and what liberties she took with the story.

I’m sort of a sucker for David Weber, so this was a no-brainer book. Actually, it was a no brain required book, and I’m sort of pissed that I wasted 2 days on it. It is a placeholder/filler book, and hopefully will be leading in to some action for the next Honor Harrington book. After reading A Beautiful Friendship, I’m kind of upset that this made it out the gate.

I re-read Reamde since I zipped through it the first time in just a few days. I was hoping it was better on the re-read, but nope. :/ I wouldn’t call it Stephenson’s best work, but it is solidly in the middle of the pack. I’m gonna keep my hardcover copy, but probably give it a few years before I go at it again.

Holy shit, this is a good book. I can see why it made Oprah’s book club. I will be adding it to my re-read stack. Set in the Democratic Republic of the Congo during the Congo Crisis in the mid 60′s, it is an exercise in privilege and politics as told through the voices of the wife and daughters of a Baptist Missionary.

Someone challenged Jim Butcher that he “couldn’t write a good story based on a lame idea.” Jim responded that he would write a story based on two lame idea’s of the challenger’s choosing. The Lost Roman Legion, and Pokémon were the winners, and the result was a six book series.

It slags a bit in the middle, but that is a fantasy issue, rather than a “lame idea” issue. This was my second time through the series, and I’m not sure if it lived up to my memory of the first pass through. I found myself skipping whole battles to get back to “the good story.”

Harry Potter crossed with the Chronicles of Narnia mixed with a alcoholic haze. These are damn fine books.

This is the first time I’ve picked up any Picoult – I’ve only seen her books at airport bookstores, which isn’t really a recommendation for me. However, these are seriously intense books about hard topics such as medical agency, disability, and personal faith. All three of these books heavily involve children, and at times I had to turn off my kindle for a moment. I’ll be reading the rest of her books when I can work up the nerve for a good cry.
